One of the best things we have seen lately is the Geico commercial featuring John Stamos knitting a scarf. When he gives it to Jeanne, she compliments his stitch pattern and he flippantly replies that it is a double fleck pattern with reverse garter stitch- no big deal. It is hilarious and timely. We started wondering how many celebrities knit in real life. It makes sense for people who work long hours and travel frequently to knit as a form of stress relief.
Here is what we learned:
Beloved hostess of Wheel of Fortune, Vanna White is a big fan of yarn arts. She has been seen on set knitting and crocheting. She is so passionate that in 2016, she offered a few of her personally designed patterns.
Representing celebrity millennial knitters, in 2017, Demi Lovato posted this photo of her knitting on an airplane to her Instagram account.
The iconic actress who brought us The Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia, Into the Woods, Sophie's Choice and countless other treasures, Meryl Streep loves knitting. She reports living an ordinary life at home with her husband, Don Gummer. She prefers knitting at home rather than attending glamorous parties and events.
You may know her from Jessica Jones, Breaking Bad, Veronica Mars, or Gilmore Girls. Krysten Ritter is one of our favorite celebrity knitters. She has her own collection of knitwear and even attempted to teach Stephen Colbert to knit in this epic episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. And let's not forget that she was on the cover of Vogue Knitting!
Lovingly remembered for his comedic genius, Robin Williams was an absolute treasure. The list of his life-changing movies and accomplishments is too long to name. However, his debut role as Mork in Mork and Mindy is memorable for avid knitters.
Although Mork was of Orkan decent, knitting was an important part of his life on Earth.
"Sex and the City" star, Sarah Jessica Parker, has been repeatedly spotted knitting on set. In 2006, when Good Housekeeping asked her how she relaxes in her spare time, she replied, "I read, watch TV, or knit. But I try to knit and watch TV at the same time, which means I end up with many dropped stitches."
We love a man who knits. David Arquette attributes his knitting skills to his grandmother, who taught him to knit as a young child. David is such a passionate knitter that he appeared on the cover of Celebrity Scarves 2.
Known as a bad boy of Hollywood, Russell Crowe reportedly began knitting as a form of anger management. We agree that knitters are happier people.
We adore this fabulous photo of Catherine Zeta-Jones knitting on the set of Zorro. She is yet another actress who knits during their downtime on set.
You know her from Mad Men and Scoob! but did you know that Christina Hendricks is a knitter. When asked what her favorite relaxation ritual was, she replied simply, "I knit." She is our kind of people!
We have fully established that we are in fantastic company with our fellow celeb knitters. Whether knitting was passed down through the generations, serves as a distraction while waiting, or is a stress reliever, celebrities knit for the same reasons we knit.
Do you know of any other knitting celebrities? If so, let us know in the comments.
